Do I Have to Have My Well Water Tested?

For those of us in rural areas, well water is the common source for providing your home’s water needs. One of the benefits of using a well is that you don’t have to worry about a monthly or quarterly water bill, but the water is considered private and as such is your total responsibility. This means that all maintenance for your well, including testing the water, is entirely up to you. Many homeowners mistakenly believe that any contamination can be tasted in the water, thereby keeping you safe, but this isn’t necessarily true; you could be imbibing contaminants and not know it. The experts at D’Spain Sales & Service, Inc., can help you with all your well water testing needs in Fair Oaks Ranch, TX. Just give us a call and we’ll get you scheduled for an appointment right away.

What to Test for In Your Well

So what exactly will a technician be looking for in your well water? Here are the three main contaminants that are tested for:

  • pH levels – pH levels indicate how acidic or base your drinking water is. Healthy drinking water should fall into a neutral zone, which is 7 on the pH scale. Zero is too acidic and 14 is too base.
  • Total coliforms – coliforms are bacterial microbes that originate in the digestive systems of warm-blooded animals. These microbes can be found on surfaces (including water), in dirt and on plants. Coliform microbes can’t harm you, but a high total coliform count can indicate the presence of microbes that can, including viruses, bacteria and parasites.
  • Fecal coliforms/E. Coli – fecal coliforms are a specific type of total coliform and come from the stool of both animal and humans; E. coli is included in the group of microbes because they are part of the fecal coliform group. While fecal coliforms and E. coli aren’t harmful themselves, a test indicating high levels of them usually means there are other dangerous microbes in your water.

It is in the best interest of you and your family to have your well water tested each spring. Our experts are here to help you with all of your well water testing needs, so give us a call today!
