The Importance of Changing Filters in Your Air Conditioner

Fall officially arrives this week, but most residents of Fredericksburg, TX know that warm weather will continue into October and possibly beyond. Your air conditioner, already handling a daily workload for months, will be under more pressure than ever to perform as summer comes to an end, and that means it’s very important that you ensure you regularly change the filters on your system. Ideally, they should be changed once a month, but you should do so no less often than every 2-3 months. It’s easy enough to perform yourself, and you can purchase replacement filters at your local hardware store or home improvement center. (In fact, it might be a good idea to stock up on extra filters so you have them on-hand when you need them.) But why is it so important to do so?

  1. Cleaner Air. Filters help strain out dust, dirt and other contaminants in your air, which lower the quality of your life in a number of ways. Besides keeping furnishings clear of dust, it makes the atmosphere more breathable and prevents the spread of germs and bacteria. This is particularly important for households with family members who are vulnerable to illness, such as infants, the elderly and those suffering from conditions such as asthma.
  2. Cleaner Air Conditioners. Filters help keep dust out of the interior of the air conditioner as well, which can avoid a huge number of problems. Dust coating the coils can create frost and ice, which limits the air conditioner’s ability to do its job and forces it to work harder to adequately cool your home. Dust can also increase friction in key components with moving parts, which causes unnecessary wear and tear. Changing filters regularly will help keep these problems to a minimum.
