How Does a Sump Pump Work?
Sump pumps are amazing pieces of technology. They keep your home protected from surging floodwaters, and they even stop your basement from flooding, even if it’s below the water line. It doesn’t matter if you’ve got dry, arid land around your home that can’t absorb water properly, you just don’t have to deal with a flooding basement anymore.
Here’s how the system works. It is separated into two parts, the sump and the pump. When they work together, they siphon floodwater away from the basement of your home, and pour it to an area of your property or a storm drain where the water can freely flow back to a water source like a lake, pond, or river.
The sump part of the sump pump is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a hold that’s drilled in your basement floor that collects the floodwaters. This hole doesn’t have to be drilled, but if you’ve got a concrete basement slab, then it’s going to need to be placed beneath it.
As the water enters your home during flood events, the sump is the natural place it will go since it’s the lowest area in your home. When the water finally collects in the sump, the pump is then activated.
The pump component is simple. Once the sump is full of water, the pump then uses electrical energy to push water from your home, through a small hose, to an area of your property where it can properly be drained. This can be a storm drain, a river, a lake, a pond, or any area that pushes the water away from your home.
As you can see, both the sump and the pump work together to consistently keep your home safe and secure from flooding events.
